SASANIAN KINGS. Ardashir III, 628-630. Drachm (Silver, 31 mm, 4.11 g, 6 h), AW (Ohrmazd-Ardaxšēr), RY 2 = 629. Draped bust of Ardashir III to right, wearing elaborate mural crown; behind head, ‘ʾp̄zwn’ (‘increase’ in Pahlavi); before head, ‘ʾrthštr’, i.e. ‘Ardaxšēr’ (‘Ardashir’ in Pahlavi); graffito on the margin beginning at 4h, ‘yẕdʾn dʾt’, i.e. ‘Yazdān-Dād’ (‘Yazdan-Dad’ [a proper name], in Pahlavi). Rev. Fire altar with ribbons, flanked by two attendants; above altar, star and crescent; to left, date in Pahlavi; to right, ‘AW’ (abbreviation for the name of the mint in Pahlavi). Göbl type II/1. Struck from worn dies and with light marks, otherwise, good very fine.
